Pursue Love
I'm thankful to have lots of friends creating things to make the world a better place.
Just to name a few:
- Alex + Dalton live out of an RV and lead a nonprofit organization called Explore Kindness that aims to make the world a better place, one act of random kindness at a time.
- Alli + Nicole cultivate a creative community called Rauthenticity to connect, share and grow with those living their most authentic life.
- Tony is the founder and CEO of Weird Enough Productions, a media production company dedicated to creating positive media images of black men and other minority groups.
While I'm grateful to have friends like these in my life, it also opens up the door for comparison and envy, especially when I see all the good they're doing and wonder how I measure up.
A few weeks ago, I hit a low point in my feelings of inadequacy. I started feeling like I should be doing more, like Car Window Poetry should have more social media followers, and even like I should have a team around me even though I have nothing to pay them. But after talking to a few friends, I remembered my path isn't somebody else's. Car Window Poetry is exactly what it's meant to be right now.
I'm learning more and more that comparison kills. When we compare, we shift our focus from our own journeys and get lost trying to follow someone else's path. It's a lot better to pursue love. Life is lived to the fullest when you're not looking to live somebody else's life, but rather looking to enjoy the journey you're on and not trying to force a path that's not your own.
This past week, I traveled to Los Angeles and it felt like a culmination of what happens when you choose to pursue love.
I found myself on a beach surrounded by world-changers.
I got to present alongside MyIntent and share Car Window Poetry with 7th graders in Crenshaw.
I met my hero AND he knew who I was, and check this: he told me he admired the magic YOU are spreading through Car Window Poetry.
Right now more than ever before, I believe I'm where I need to be, I'm doing what I need to do, and that's all that matters to me. You're right where you need to be, too. Don't let someone else's expectations take you off the path laid before you. Identify your true north and never stop moving in that direction!
With love,
