In the United States, we are 5 days away from electing a new president.

More so than in previous election seasons, it feels like there isn't much to agree on. Opportunities where all people can come together around one table are few and far between.

But these spaces exist. Recently, while listening to a Liturgists Podcast episode on Suffering, the hosts discussed charity: water, a non-profit that brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries, as a cause all people can get behind.

Looking around the room at last Saturday's Socktoberfest event, I realized Car Window Poetry is one of those projects in which we can all unite under the mission of working for the good of all people. We had people from different ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, and faiths all come together in one room to prove that even the smallest acts of love, like sharing a poem or donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless.

We even had one couple I had never met before attend Socktoberfest. When discussing how they learned about the event, they shared how they saw it on Facebook and loved the opportunity to donate socks and other necessities to Colorado Springs' homeless community.

No two people in the room last Saturday agreed on 100% everything, but one thing they did all choose to agree on was love – so much so they donated 347 total items to homeless youth in Colorado Springs.

I believe we can all agree on love. The table is wide enough for each of us, regardless of our opinions or strong beliefs, and love is what brings us all together.

Here are all the items donated last Saturday:

• 228 pairs of socks
• 101 toiletries
• 26 food items
• 19 articles of clothing

In addition to the above items, we were able to give around 200 poems of encouragement to Urban Peak Colorado Springs to distribute to their clients!

Move in the direction of love. Keep going.
